It’s also home to one of the more characteristic Texas state parks. The last time I visited Caprock Canyons State Park, I arrived on a beautiful, open-sky afternoon, only to find myself car-camping that night in one of the most voluminous winter thunderstorms I’ve experienced since living in this part of the state.

Then it got cold. Very cold.

The next morning, I woke up to find everything covered in ice. Although snow is not all that frequent here, ice is an ever present and often visual element to the season. That with the low fog cover and the contrast between evergreen cedar trees and the time-telling red dirt, you might find it worth your while taking images in adverse weather.

I’m headed back out to Caprock Canyons early in the morning for a day shoot, and thought about the weather predictions made for the next couple days. It’s supposed to be nice…we’ll see!

More to come.

Across West and North Texas, as well as North Louisiana, we’ve seen a rather mild winter so far. Add a little moisture, humidity, and some sub-freezing morning temperatures, you have a combination for rather clear days and fog on the water. This low fog just south of Sibley, Louisiana, provided a thin enough shroud for reflections across a waterfowl stopover. The stark contrast between white-barked deciduous and the dark tones of the evergreens made the ghosts in the water that much more attractive.

Back in Texas for the time being. New Mexico might be calling soon!

I was poking around on David duChemin’s blog, The PixelatedImage, and ran up on his post about the weather outside. This reminded me of our most recent weekend in Lubbock when tons of fog set in for a few days (quite unique in West Texas). For you photogs, this is not a time to set around much! When you are given fog, you, you…well, there’s no adage here to relate. Basically, the point it is: fog makes things look interesting, presents them in totally different light, and adds an almost captivating experience for the viewer.

My favorite fog image is the one above. I like to call this “Tractor Graveyard.” From the first time I saw this small field of dilapidating machines, I knew this place as a cemetery. However, it wasn’t until it was smothered in fog did it FEEL like a tractor graveyard!

More on fog and water later!
