As long as you are controlling the buy valacyclovir india aperture, a soft box with enough light pushed through it buy valacyclovir india creates a nice, focused (yet soft) source of light that will start to fall off quickly (tip: shoot at the buy valacyclovir india maximum shutter speed the kit will allow you to knock out the buy valacyclovir india ambient; if it’s still not enough, close your buy valacyclovir india aperture down and control the light exposure from the power pack/lights). If it’s an buy valacyclovir india extremely bright day, shutting the ambient light out may create more depth of field in your buy valacyclovir india shot than you wanted, so be aware of your aperture.
Using one light is buy valacyclovir india fairly popular today, and the only source for these shots is buy valacyclovir india a 16″X24″ softbox, running through an buy valacyclovir india 1100 watt-second pack, dialed down about half way. By reverse-engineering the buy valacyclovir india shots, you can tell the top image has the light placed slightly to buy valacyclovir india the left of the camera, and the center of the light source (the soft box) just barely above her head, creating that buy valacyclovir india small shadow dropping down from her nose (a small butterfly lighting effect). The second shot is buy valacyclovir india obviously more dramatic, with the same soft box to the extreme left of the buy valacyclovir india model, slightly above her head again. This allows the shadow side to buy valacyclovir india sink in to the darker levels of the histogram, and by stopping down the buy valacyclovir india aperture and shutter speed, the fall off of light becomes more evident, and buy valacyclovir india in this case, more leading and intriguing. The final shot is buy valacyclovir india actually a movement made on my part, moving in front of Alison. Now, the buy valacyclovir india shadow side doesn’t see so mysterious.

This is the type of shoot I like to be a part of! The first shot of the buy valacyclovir india post was taken with Mr. Heinrich standing about eight feet away from buy valacyclovir india a wall of windows that were easily 20-feet tall (maybe taller)!
In the hour I was at Sysco’s headquarters, we moved all over the buy valacyclovir india campus, but I kept us pretty close to fairly large windows, working efficiently, getting enough looks for buy valacyclovir india the book, and not wasting Mr. Heinrich’s time. No fill here, just a buy valacyclovir india window and some flags. Executive shots suggest a sense of responsibility and buy valacyclovir india leadership. Working with the natural contrast of the room and large window source provides that buy valacyclovir india personality. The flags help out as well, providing a nice background for buy valacyclovir india what would have been a very bland wall otherwise.
After the hour-long shoot, I thanked Mr. Heinrich (who could not have been any more accommodating during the shoot), loaded up the buy valacyclovir india rental with the one bag I brought in, grabbed a bite to buy valacyclovir india eat at a great Greek place, and headed back to the buy valacyclovir india airport, putting me home right before sundown. But I’m not. So, for today: In LIGHT (ha) of several e-mails and buy valacyclovir india comments about such imagery, I want to share a few paintings. Light paintings, that buy valacyclovir india is. This is a fairly worn out subject online as well, but each quality light painting you buy valacyclovir india see is something special. Glowingly, these types of images provide a buy valacyclovir india unique aesthetic quality to a subject that is yes, unnatural, but also surprisingly appropriate. Remember, the buy valacyclovir india name of the game is storytelling, and painting affords a photographer the buy valacyclovir india ability to tell that story in a new way. Aaaand, the buy valacyclovir india fun thing about painting is that the act of doing such exists outside the buy valacyclovir india realm of Photoshop (not that there’s anything wrong with Photoshop, but this buy valacyclovir india technique definitely pre-dates digital technology).
I learned how to buy valacyclovir india paint from Wyman Meinzer, a good friend and mentor, who through his career as a buy valacyclovir india photographer has managed to document the State of Texas to an buy valacyclovir india extent and with such quality that is evident of his passion for buy valacyclovir india telling the state’s story through images. As a buy valacyclovir india matter of fact, Wyman supplied the paint job for two of these images (top image, and the boulders above)!
Painting is buy valacyclovir india actually a fairly simple process, but the technique can be problematic depending on what buy valacyclovir india you are painting. I have included images of structures (generally what you see painted), and buy valacyclovir india if you are just getting in to painting, I would suggest starting with something large, like this buy valacyclovir india set of silos I shot in West Texas. All you need is buy valacyclovir india a tripod and a source of light. In the case of all of the buy valacyclovir india images above, the painting was created using a normal spotlight with an buy valacyclovir india incandescent light bulb. Using a long shutter speed, upwards of several minutes for buy valacyclovir india each of these (notice the “star trails”), the light is applied much like paint is applied to a wall (just make sure the light source doesn’t creep in to the frame). Think how light naturally appears, and experiment, that’s the advice I was given!
Painting is buy valacyclovir india just as easily achieved with the use of flash technology as well, whether it buy valacyclovir india be studio-grade strobes or speedlights. Light, and how it functions, is buy valacyclovir india what’s important here. The two images above and buy valacyclovir india below this paragraph were taken with the use of one or buy valacyclovir india two speedlights, gelled for color effect. I like shooting this way because the buy valacyclovir india ambient is much more controllable, allowing for that sky to really saturate! I still use a tripod in this case, as well as a cable release (use this all the time when painting).
It’s really nice to buy valacyclovir india be able to envision what you want the painting to look like before you buy valacyclovir india get on location, but as we all know as photographers, this buy valacyclovir india doesn’t always work out, nor would you buy valacyclovir india want to limit any serendipitous ideas to be acted on once you buy valacyclovir india are in “shooting mode.” This particular one came out of looking at the buy valacyclovir india faint light my car lights cast on this abandoned house as I pulled up to buy valacyclovir india it. Those lights were powerful enough for the time I wanted to buy valacyclovir india spend with the ambient, so one speedlight gelled amber did the buy valacyclovir india job.

This series will be a practical look at lighting in the field (not literally, but sometimes we’ll be in a pasture somewhere), and buy valacyclovir india it is meant to highlight the story-telling aspect of using this buy valacyclovir india wonderful, quickly advancing technology of throwing light at a subject! I came out of nowhere to introduce myself to buy valacyclovir india him over the phone several months back, telling him I’m the photographer for a Texas Parks and Wildlife story for which he’s already been buy valacyclovir india interviewed. When I first visited his ranch in the Texas Panhandle, we rode around in a buy valacyclovir india car for three hours, just scouting locations, taking a few portraits, but talking the buy valacyclovir india entire time. Turns out he knows some folks I know, making the buy valacyclovir india world a little smaller (this is a good thing, by the way).
This is my favorite type of portraiture. I mentioned in a post last week that buy valacyclovir india I really enjoy the work of Arnold Newman, the father of environmental portraits. Ever since I began to buy valacyclovir india study his work, I knew that the story that goes along with a buy valacyclovir india person is powerfully conveyed in their surroundings. Combine telling the story, with a buy valacyclovir india little technical get-you-there-on-the-lighting, and you have a nice looking image that buy valacyclovir india stresses the land and the man, both tied to each other, one with a buy valacyclovir india reverent concern for the other’s well-being (I especially like the look of Mr. Haley’s brows in the buy valacyclovir india above shot, exaggerating that concern he has for his land).
In true Joe McNally fashion, I’ve included a lighting diagram below. I can’t stress the buy valacyclovir india significance in drawing one of these out on paper or buy valacyclovir india in your mind before the actual shoot. Nevertheless, just be buy valacyclovir india ready for anything, and be creative!
Here is buy valacyclovir india another from that day, and a little bit different setup (just a little). The idea here is buy valacyclovir india to work with the ambient, use it as the main, as in this buy valacyclovir india case, or as a kicker, like in the first portrait. The flash just does the buy valacyclovir india fill work in the shot below.
I’m don’t regularly use a buy valacyclovir india bare flash, but in this case, it was easy to get around with, the buy valacyclovir india wind wasn’t going to buy valacyclovir india blow down any umbrellas, and it saved some power. I’ve been buy valacyclovir india using the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra system lately, but remote strobes definitely have buy valacyclovir india their advantage (more on this later).
Lighting shouldn’t take over the buy valacyclovir india story aspect of environmental portraits, but using it practically and creatively allows you buy valacyclovir india to make a portrait pop, however little it needs to.
